LED spotlight VS floodlight – Focusing and Diffusion

LED spotlights and LED floodlights are common lighting devices, in different scenarios they have different applications.

LED Spotlight

LED spotlight is suitable for small engineering applications, and can be controlled by the built-in microchip to realize various dynamic effects, such as fading, jumping, flashing, and so on. It can be used directly without a controller. Alternatively, more effects such as chasing and scanning can be realized through DMX control.

The application places of LED spotlight mainly include the exterior wall lighting of single building, historical building complex, translucent lighting inside the building, indoor local lighting, green landscape lighting, billboard lighting, medical facilities lighting and the atmosphere lighting of entertainment places.

LED Floodlight

LED floodlight is a kind of point light source that can evenly irradiate in all directions. Its irradiation range can be adjusted as needed and presents a positive octahedral image in the scene. Floodlights are one of the most commonly used light sources when creating effects and can be used to illuminate the entire scene. In a single scenario, multiple floodlights can be used to produce better results.

Floodlights have a large illumination range and many secondary functions. For example, placing a floodlight close to the surface of an object produces a bright illumination that changes the light perception of the object and the scene. In photography, it can be placed outside the range of the camera or inside objects to create specific lighting effects. Usually, multiple floodlights of different colors are used in a scene, and they are projected and blended on the model to illuminate dark areas. In outdoor scenes, outdoor solar street lights and outside lights for yard often use floodlights.

Differences in lighting effects

The difference between spotlights and floodlights is mainly lighting form and irradiation range. LED outdoor spotlights have a spotlight effect, with a strong direct lighting ability and long-distance lighting effect, which can shoot light in a specified direction; while floodlights are diffused and can illuminate the entire scene.

Difference in lighting range

LED spotlights, also known as high lumen flashlight, have a more focused beam and a relatively small illumination range, making them suitable for use in lighting environments where specific scenes or objects need to be highlighted. On the other hand, floodlights provide a wide range of illumination and can cover a large area.

Differences in application scenarios

Due to their own characteristics, LED spotlights are mostly used in lighting environments such as stages, exhibition halls, theaters and other lighting environments that need to highlight specific objects or areas. And floodlights are commonly used in indoor lighting, architectural exterior decorative lighting, plaza lighting and other scenes that require a large range of uniform lighting.

Differences in considerations

In the process of use, the matters that need attention are also different. For spotlights, attention needs to be paid to the accuracy of the beam, high-purity aluminum reflectors, optimal reflectance, and symmetrical narrow-angle, wide-angle and asymmetrical light distribution systems. In addition, spotlight luminaires are often supplied with a graduated plate to facilitate adjustment of the angle of illumination. On the other hand, too much use for floodlights may result in a bland effect. Therefore, in the production process, you need to pay attention to the lighting parameters and the overall effect of the light sense of the impact of the picture.

Floodlights and spotlights differ in terms of lighting effect, irradiation range and place of application, and choosing the right luminaire can better meet the lighting needs.
